About the team

A team focused on developing non-toxic and non-incendiary pyrotechnic smoke utilizing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Technical Information

Smoke can be used to provide cover or signals in dangerous situations faced in civilian, security and law enforcement applications. Hexachloroethane Smoke (HCE) is used but is toxic and has proven to be harmful to the environment and the people exposed to it. The existing hexachloroethane (HC) and terephthalic (TA) smoke compositions can be altered to contribute positively to health, safety and the environment through the application of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Amid technological innovation that allows sensing beyond the visible into the infrared (IR) region, the smoke arms race has begun. MOFs provide smoke that obscures both visible and IR detection. MOFs can be synthesized using TA or other linkers which may be liberated during burning. This grenade can be an all-in-one and achieve the function of multiple, different smoke covers or signals.
